The lake is named after the Greek general and politician Nikolaos Plastiras, who was the first to visualize the construction of an artificial lake in the area in 1925. It was created at the plateau of Nevropoli, at an altitude of 800 m, when the waters of the Megdova river flooded the area following the construction of a dam in "Kakkavakia" area. The dam which lies near the Moucha settlement was concluded in 1959. Its height is 83 m. and its length 220 m.
